The uniforms from Star Trek : The Motion Picture were a result of Robert Wise feeling like the original uniforms were an assault on the eyes. He could not understand how William Shatner, playing a captain, could allow somebody wearing a red shirt enter the screen and capture all the visual attention. The result of that thought were the vey undtstated and even more pajama like uniforms of TMP.
